The Cycle of Reproduction of Conflicting Identities in the Middle East

Abstract

The Middle East is the origin and confluence of conflicting identities, as a consequence of which crisis is reproduced in the region. The most significant problem in understanding the nature and continuity of crisis in the Middle East is the discovery of the process of reproduction of conflicting identities in this geographical region. In one form or another, conflicting identities in the Middle East give rise to a variety of crises, no solution to which has been offered yet. The main question of this research is how crisis is reproduced and perpetuated in the Middle East. A possible answer is that the main origin of crisis in the Middle East seems to be the existence of conflicting identities in the region, which reproduces conflicting identities and perpetuates crisis there. Part of identity conflict in the region has its roots in domestic elements such as historical experience, domestic variables that constitute conflicting identities such as Wahhabism, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, as well as the relation between governments and elites. Another part of such conflict is rooted in foreign factors such as colonialism and political Islam (at the level of the Islamic world), which lead to identity threats. On these criteria, the present article offers a formulation of the cycle of crisis in the Middle East in light of conflicting identities so that we can have an understanding of the nature of crisis and its perpetuation.

دوامة إعادة إنتاج الهویات المتخاصمة فی الشرق الأوسط

Abstract [العربیة]

الشرق الأوسط هو المکان الذی تنشأ وتلتقی فیه الهویات المتخاصمة، والنتیجة هی إعادة إنتاج الأزمات فی هذه المنطقة. إنّ أهمّ قضیة فی فهم طبیعة الأزمات واستدامتها فی الشرق الأوسط هو اکتشاف عملیة إعادة إنتاج الهویات المتخاصمة فی هذه المنطقة الجغرافیة. تظهر الهویات المتخاصمة فی الشرق الأوسط دائماً بأشکال مختلفة وتصبح مصدر أزمات مختلفة لم یتمّ تقدیم حلّ محدّد لها حتى الآن. یرتکز السؤال الرئیسی لهذا البحث على کیفیة إعادة إنتاج الأزمات واستدامتها فی الشرق الأوسط. فی إجابة محتملة على السؤال المذکور، یبدو أنّ المصدر الرئیسی للأزمات فی الشرق الأوسط هو وجود هویات متخاصمة فی هذه المنطقة، ممّا یؤدّی إلى إعادة إنتاج الهویات المتخاصمة واستدامة الأزمات فیها. جزء من التخاصم بین الهویات فی هذه المنطقة متجذّر فی عناصر داخلیة مثل التجربة التاریخیة والمتغیّرات الداخلیة المکوّنة للهویات المتخاصمة مثل الوهابیة والقاعدة وداعش، وکذلک العلاقة بین الحکم والصفوة. کما أنّ جزءً آخر متجذّر فی عوامل خارجیة مثل الاستعمار والإسلام السیاسی (على مستوى العالم الإسلامی)، ممّا یؤدّی إلى تهدیدات بین الهویات. وبناءً على هذه المؤشرات، فإنّ إنجاز هذه الورقة الراهنة هو عبارة عن تقدیم صیاغة لدوامة إعادة إنتاج الأزمات فی الشرق الأوسط فی ضوء الهویات المتخاصمة، لکی نتمکن من فهم طبیعة الأزمات واستدامتها.
