Abstract

The conventional image of Sayyid Jamal ad-Din Asadabadi presents him as a person who is concerned about Islam and the revival of religion against modern thought and civilization above all else. His inflexible anti-colonialism is also placed in this framework. But it seems that more accurate review and study of the documents and works left by Asadabadi will lead us to a lesser known side of him. The purpose of this research is to investigate and analyze this aspect in Asadabadi's thought and works. Based on this, our main question is: Is Asadabadi's main goal and concern the revival of religion and political Islam against modern thought and civilization, or is it progress and exit from the backwardness of Islamic societies? Our hypothesis is that: the existence of important and undeniable indications and evidences in the works and documents related to Asadabadi indicates that he used Islamism as a means to improve the deplorable condition of Islamic societies and compensate their backwardness, Compared to the West. The approach of this research is text-oriented and based on library sources and documents. The method of this research is descriptive-analytical method. Also, considering the nature of Asadabadi's theoretical and practical activities, we have used Strauss's "Esotericism" theory in interpreting the text.
