Abstract

One of the main issues that has attracted the attention of all analysts from the perspective of strategic studies is the analysis of the conditions, position and environmental situation (security-defense) of the two countries of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Iraq in the regional security system of West Asia in the coming decade. The present study has been developed and designed with a novel and future-oriented perspective, of the type of future research (applied), with the scenario writing method, in a qualitative manner and with a descriptive-analytical approach. The question is, in which direction will the position of the environmental situation (defense-security) of the two countries of Iran and Iraq in the regional environment of West Asia move in the coming decade? It seems that the environmental position of the two countries of Iran and Iraq in the regional system of West Asia in the coming decade will be different from each other.Because the strategies and goals designed by the two countries in the regional environment are different and contradictory. The findings of the present study show that the environmental arrangements (defense-security) in the coming decade in the West Asian region will follow four patterns (hegemonic stability, partnership, balance of power, regional hegemony). Iran, considering its interests, components, and position in the region, has designed its ultimate goal by designing different strategies and tactics (eliminating regional and international competitors), to achieve regional hegemony (the second scenario). Iraq, considering its interests, existing components, and position, is pursuing a partnership model and, to some extent, a balance of power (the scenario of a coherent Iraq and federalism).achieve regional hegemony (the second scenario). Iraq, considering its interests, existing components, and position, is pursuing a partnership model and, to some extent, a balance of power (the scenario of a coherent Iraq and federalism).
